چکیده

We study the scaling form for the cell boundary misorientation angle distribution of Hughes and co-workers. By formulating the problem in terms of random walks in rotation space, we are able to incorporate the new cell boundaries formed during cell refinement with increasing deformation ǫ. The simplest form for the corresponding diffusion equation yields a good fit to the experimental scaling curve for the incidental boundaries, including the ǫ scaling of the average angle and the linear slope at small angles. We consider effects of crystalline anisotropy and strain gradients, and show that they also allow scaling collapses but change the form of the scaling function – yielding scaling but not universality. Existing theories formulated in terms of uncorrelated random dislocation motion exhibit the experimental scaling of average angle only if cell refinement is ignored.

Scaling in plasticity-induced cell-boundary microstructure: Fragmentation and rotational diffusion

We develop a simple computational model for cell-boundary evolution in plastic deformation. We study the cell-boundary size distribution and cell-boundary misorientation distribution that experimentally have been found to have scaling forms that are largely material independent. The cell division acts as a source term in the misorientation distribution which significantly alters the scaling for...

The mechanics of deformation-induced subgrain-dislocation structures in metallic crystals at large strains

We present a streamlined limiting case of the theory of Ortiz & Repetto for crystals with microstructure in which the crystals are assumed to exhibit in ̄nitely strong latent hardening. We take this property to signify that the crystal must necessarily deform in single slip at all material points. This requirement introduces a non-convex constraint that renders the incremental problem non-convex...

Generalized scaling of misorientation angle distributions at meso-scale in deformed materials

Scaling behaviour has been observed at mesoscopic level irrespective of crystal structure, type of boundary and operative micro-mechanisms like slip and twinning. The presence of scaling at the meso-scale accompanied with that at the nano-scale clearly demonstrates the intrinsic spanning for different deformation processes and a true universal nature of scaling. The origin of a ½ power law in d...

The relative grain boundary area and energy distributions in a ferritic steel determined from three-dimensional electron backscatter diffraction maps

The relative grain boundary area and energy distributions of a ferritic steel were characterized as a function of lattice misorientation and boundary plane orientation using focused ion beam serial sectioning combined with electron backscatter diffraction. The grain boundary energy and population depended on both the grain boundary plane orientation and lattice misorientation. When misorientati...

The five-parameter grain boundary character and energy distributions of a fully austenitic high-manganese steel using three dimensional data

The three-dimensional interfacial grain boundary network in a fully austenitic high-manganese steel was studied as a function of all five macroscopic crystallographic parameters (i.e. lattice misorientation and grain boundary plane normal) using electron backscattering diffraction mapping in conjunction with focused ion beam serial sectioning. The relative grain boundary area and energy distrib...
